What are Moderate Political Views?

Watch the news today, and you will see an America that is bitterly divided between liberal and conservative. The ideologies have drifted so far apart that there is no longer middle ground on which to reach a compromise. While Republicans and Democrats do sometimes come together to make bipartisan decisions in Congress, the discourse around the core issues remains separate and hostile.

Staunch Moderates is a group that exists to restore that lost middle ground that is necessary for achieving forward progress in our society. We believe that the number of Americans with moderate political views far exceeds what the news represents. While it is not a mistake to point out the polarization that has afflicted our politics, we feel that the there are many thoughtful, calm Americans who prefer to weigh the issues and reach rational conclusions, and not simply adhere to an “either/or,” “us/them” mentality that leads to little more than a shouting match.

As moderates, we believe that productive cooperation is not only possible but is also what is best and necessary for the survival of our society. We believe that reasoned, thoughtful discussion between people who hold opposing points of view will yield more workable solutions than the dismissive herd-like dynamics that reduce today’s exaggerated political debate into a contest between echo chambers. Essentially, our moderate political views are centered on:

Respect - We each have a voice, and we each have a stake in the success of our country. Let’s hear each other out, come together as Americans rather than as members of a political party, and try to reach a mutual understanding for the greater good.

Consideration - The United States is a complex society with a dynamic, globalized economy. Since each of us only has access to our own vantage point and experiences, it is vital that we take in all points of view, consider each issue from all sides, to approach a better understanding of the larger picture.

Positive Outcomes - The Republican/Democrat divide often results in a legislative stalemate. What good does this condition serve? In order to steer our country into future security and prosperity, we need leaders who can think outside of the box, work together, and achieve the goals that serve the interests of the people who elected them.
